Holidays, Music, and Mayhem
By: Hellcat
I was fortunate this holiday season when it came down to music. One might say, that I had been good all year so Santa saw fit to put some wicked musical experiences and opportunities in my stocking…I wouldn’t, but someone out there might still be optimistic. To kick off my well-deserved vacation, I headed down to Atlanta for a X-mas Jam, put on by a local radio station, 99x, and to my extreme merriment got to see Silversun Pickups, The Shins, Silverchair, and Modest Mouse. I love the Silversun Pickups. I discovered them in 2006 when I stumbled upon their debut EP, Pikul, which came out the previous year, and am still currently obsessed with their most recent release Carnavas. When my phone rings…it’s the Silversun Pickups. This is how much I love this band. Seeing them live, was amazing. They are just as good live, if not better than usual. The lead singer’s voice is amazing and their drummer is a freaking animal.

Bonnzo Journalism?
by Joe Lance
From a recent update sent to Bonnaroo email subscribers:
We'd like to give a big Bonnaroo welcome to the folks at D-Link. They have stepped up to provide Bonnaroo attendees with a cutting-edge high-tech network that will enable you to connect with each other and the outside world. This year, D-Link will be providing 20-plus computers with high-speed Internet access from within the MediaLounge, not to mention Wi-Fi internet at various locations within Centeroo to make it easier than ever for attendees to connect to cyberspace.
These connections will make it possible for your Pulse Blog to bring you updates from the festival, throughout its entirety.
As the kids (and their parents) say, "Woot!"
Stay tuned to this site for impassioned, if self-gratifying, entries from yours truly, the Bonnaroo n00b. The fun begins Thursday.

Busted!: Faith Hill Acts the Fool in CMA Loss
From USA Today's account:
Hill, a nominee for female vocalist, was on camera along with fellow contenders Sara Evans, Martina McBride, Gretchen Wilson and Carrie Underwood. When Underwood was announced as the winner, the camera caught Hill with arms raised, as if poised to accept, then a split second later mouthing a surprised, "What?"
The story then goes on to quote a representative from Hill's management company, who offered the following gem.
Sandra Westerman of Borman Entertainment, Hill's management company, says Hill was just joking and didn't know she was on camera: "She would never disrespect one of the other artists."
Yeah. Uh huh. Sure.
Thank you, Faith, for making an otherwise boring CMA Awards ceremony worth watching.
By the way, Carrie Underwood plays the UTC Arena Sunday night.

It's OK to Smile on Stage
Rickie Lee Jones’ somewhat disappointing recent visit to the Tivoli last month was still fresh on the minds of at least a few of us in the crowd at Friday night’s Big Head Todd and The Monsters show. In short, Ms. Jones just didn’t seem to want to be there that night. Luckily, this was not the case Friday night, as it was quickly evident that the “Big Head” in Big Head Todd is simply an anatomical reference and nothing more.

Fripp Onstage on The Pulse on Fripp
I have seen Robert Fripp numerous times at this point, but never before in the solo soundcapes/Q&A format on display at an almost sold-out Rhythm and Brews on Monday night..
Though often powerful, beautiful and moving to the faithful like myself, Fripp's soundscapes -- ambient loops constructed via an electric guitar, a Powerbook and a rather impressive effects rack -- are clearly not for everybody. 10 minutes into the performance, my longtime guitarist friend (who loves all kinds of guitarists, including Fripp disciples, the California Guitar Trio) leaned over to me and asked, "So, is this the whole show?" Feeling like a man delivering news of cancer or something equally awful, I replied with a quick "Yep." Fripp continued for 20 minutes more, after which my friend remarked that all the effects were drowning him out. I guess I can see that. Fripp is a guitarist competent in many different styles, and I have to admit that I wouldn't have minded in the least if he had busted into a few lines of "Fracture" or "Discipline" or that solo from "Sailor's Tale." But that's not what he was there for. At this stage in his life, Fripp's focus is simply the music, and this is the music -- as least as a solo artist -- that he wants to and has to play.
At roughly 30 minutes into the show, Fripp broke for the aforementioned Q&A session, kicking it off by thanking the audience for their patience in sitting through the typically trying, unorthodox and mostly melody bereft performance. This drew laughs. He continued by relaying some of the harsher reviews his performances have received over the years before opening up the floor for questions.
But not before treating me, personally, to one of the oddest nights of my life...
