Mayor Not Actually Going to be Able to Attend Mayor's WGOW Forum on Homeless Campus
Maybe you thought -- like the rest of the city -- that the mayor would be attending the February 5 WGOW-hosted homeless campus forum he announced on January 19.
Well, you were wrong.
Turns out he can't make it.
Not only that, but according to his spokesperson, Michelle Michaud, the mayor is really not the best person to be answering questions about the, um, mayor's proposed homeless campus. The best people to answer those questions are the city's CCRC "team," headed up by former executive director of the Chattanooga Homeless Coalition, John Dorris. Those are the folks that will be presenting their ideas on WGOW next Monday from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. with Bobby T. and Mary Ann.
It's not clear whether the "opposition" -- the currently officially alternate recognized title for Merri Mai Williamson -- will be attending.
Somebody from The Pulse will be there. Unless they call the whole thing off. Which is at least mildly likely at this point.
Our collective heads hurt...

Local Blogbits: 1.30.2007
With their full-length feature on permanent hiatus, Lazy Bear Productions' "Podcorn" podcast series has resumed. Hear it here.
Zack and Bill appeared on WGOW's "F.R.E.D. The Show" with Jeff Styles this morning to discuss our Sex Survey. The survey closes tomorrow night. Fill it out if you haven't already. The results will be published in our February 7 issue.
...speaking of the survey, there is a thread about it at the Chattanooga Message Forum.
Bill is slated to be interviewed tomorrow by WDEF for a piece they're working on about YouTube. It's largely in reference to this.
Ted Reynolds' "A Pretty Flyer Is Not Enough" column is being discussed in the C.I.A. forums. Check out the discussion here.

"Sweep the Leg!"
No More Kings: "Sweep the Leg"
If you're gonna write a song about the Karate Kid, you may as well recruit the original cast -- and Chattanooga's own Dennis "Mr. Belding" Haskins -- for the video.
Good stuff...

State Film Commission Director Forced Out
From NashvillePost.com:
David J. Bennett, executive director of the Tennessee Film, Entertainment and Music Commission, has resigned from that position at the behest of Gov. Phil Bredesen's administration.Bennett, a well known figure in the state's film community, was appointed to the post in early 2003.
Over the weekend, Bennett told the Memphis Commercial Appeal that he was forced out over "political pressure."
Bennett cited the passage of an economic incentives package last year by the state legislature for the entertainment industry. The measure was not part of Bredesen's legislative agenda. The film promotion measure "was not the governor's initiative, and he did not endorse it when it occurred," Bennett told the C A. "There were people in his administration who then expressed their fury when the incentives passed."
Thoughts, anyone?

Your Recycling Areas Revealed!
A quick summary of our current recycling program...
Here’s what can be placed on the curb for pickup: cardboard, newspaper, all paper grades (except shredded), plastic #1 and #2 (bottles with a neck), aluminum cans, and steel cans (food residue must be rinsed out). All of the items must be in blue bags, clear bags or a covered bin, but the items do not need to be sorted, and they can be placed in the same bag. Lids do not need to be removed from plastic recyclables, nor do aluminum cans need to be crushed.
Other recyclable materials such as shredded paper; brown, green, and clear glass bottles; computers and small electronics except TVs or microwaves; wet cell batteries; and motor oil, can be dropped off at four convenience center locations. They are: the Warner Park Recycling Center at 1250 East Third Street; the John A. Patten Recreation Center at 3202 Kelly’s Ferry Road; Access Road at DuPont Parkway; and the East Brainerd Baseball Complex at the end of Batter’s Place Road. A Brainerd location will be announced soon. Curbside recyclables also may be dropped off at these centers.
The city is now divided into four areas in which recyclables will be picked up on a monthly schedule.

Bush: Feds Can Now Open Mail Without Warrants
From USA Today:
President Bush has "quietly claimed sweeping new powers to open Americans' mail without a judge's warrant," the New York Daily News writes this morning. When he put his signature on a postal reform bill on Dec. 20, the newspaper notes, the president added a "signing statement" that "declared his right to open people's mail under emergency conditions."
Speechless. Yep, that's the word.

Yes! We Are (Maybe) Going to Get an Auto Plant at Enterprise South (Again)!
According to a piece in the Wall Street Journal, it seems we (along with three to four other locations) are in the running for a Toyota plant.
Contrary to our repeated skepticism, we would be very pleased to see it actually happen.
According to rumors discussed on WGOW today, local realtors have received inquiries from Toyota higher-ups looking for information about homes in the area.
